On 11 April 2022, the UK Government prioritized overseas businesses and launched the Global Business Mobility visa accompanied by several routes for employers worldwide who are seeking to relocate the senior or specialist employees of their company to the UK to undertake the qualified and appropriate tasks in their UK branch.

The UK Government has introduced 5 categories of Global Business Mobility visas and this article will focus on the Graduate Trainee Visa (replaced Intra Company Graduate Trainee visa).

What is Graduate Trainee Visa?

The Graduate Trainee visa enables an employer to transfer their employees to the United Kingdom for a work placement as part of a graduate training program for a specialist or managerial role.

A person who is aiming to become eligible for this specific type of route will need to persuade the UK Visas and Immigration department by meeting their set conditions which are as enclosed below.

What are the requirements for a Graduate Trainee Visa?

a.         The Applicant must be currently employed and working with the employer that has been authenticated as a sponsor by the Home Office;

b.         The Applicant must have worked for the Sponsor outside the UK for at least 3 months immediately before an application is made;

c.         The Applicant must have a valid Certificate of Sponsorship (COS) issued by the Sponsor;

d.         The job must be authentic and listed on the list of eligible occupations in which the Applicant is being sponsored; 

e.          The Applicant must be paid at least £23,100 per year;

f.          The Applicant must be able to maintain themselves in the UK without having to rely on public funds.

Can the spouse/ partner and child join the Applicant as a dependent?

The Applicant can be accompanied by a dependent partner over the age of 18 and /or dependent children under the age of 18. The Applicant needs to prove its relationship with the spouse/partner or children. 

Duration of a Graduate Trainee Visa

As soon the entry clearance has been granted, the Applicant can stay in the United Kingdom for either the time specified on the certificate of sponsorship plus 14 days, a period of 12 months, or the length of time that will take the Applicant to the maximum period of 5 years in any 6 years.
